Manhattan Country School’s 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative March on Monday attracted the attention of the local media, including longtime WBAI radio host Dred Scott Keyes and Newsday reporter Maria Alvarez.
Founders Gus & Marty Trowbridge talked to Mr. Keyes about how they were inspired to create a school during the civil rights movement, while Michèle Solá, Maiya Jackson and Mary Trowbridge shared what’s happening today at MCS. The radio show aired on Monday, January 17th as part of the Martin Luther King Day programming on WBAI, a listener-supported radio station, broadcasting at 99.5 FM in New York City. In a Newsday article, Maria Alvarez wrote: Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights legacy is not a one-day affair but a yearlong vocation for eighth graders at Manhattan Country School. More than 200 students and parents marched along Central Park West Monday. They started at John Lennon’s Strawberry Fields Garden of Peace memorial where, in speeches that voiced passion for social justice, students applied King’s message to gentrification in Harlem, religious tolerance, gay marriage and advocating for more local farms and green markets.
