Hanging amid the linocut works by Hale Woodruff and brass sculptures by Geraldine McCullough were framed photos taken by the fifth grade class at Manhattan Country School. On Saturday, students showcased the results of their sustainability photo exchange with Children’s Hope India at Essie Green Galleries in Harlem.
Fifth graders led guests on a tour of the gallery and explained their sustainability studies in great detail. “We found lots of interesting facts about India, including how they have different resources than we do,” said Jalen. “A woman in India will carry eight pounds of water on her head and walk for miles,” said Nina.
Parents, faculty, friends, and supporters of MCS and CHI filled the brownstone’s ground floor and many more spilled out onto the sidewalk. Upper School Director Maiya Jackson praised students for their hard work. “It’s exciting to see your work in a gallery, just like other artists. Congratulations to all of you.”
A silent auction of the photos from India was a highlight as enthusiastic guests discussed their favorite photos and cheered for the winning bidders. The money raised will support the fifth floor’s photography project and the work of Children’s Hope India.
